SEPTEMBER 16, 2009

In the previous session you… Continued exploring your chosen topics Tried to see possible ways to narrow down your topic even further Were assigned to read pp. 35-47

In this session we will… Have RQ#2 Continue exploring those topics Try to see possible strategies to conduct research

NOW LET’S HAVE THE QUIZ!!!

RQ#2 Directions: Provide the appropriate response that completes each statement. (15pts) Format: Size 2

RQ#2 1) True or False: A research strategy forces you to systematize your research by forcing you to identify the kind of data you need and how to get it.

RQ#2 2-5) The four basic research strategies are _____, _____, _____, and _____.

RQ#2 6) True or False: There is a directly proportional relationship between the authority of a material and the type of information it offers.

RQ#2 7) True or False: As a general rule, the more specific the source, the better it is.

RQ#2 8) True or False: The sheer volume of data online is staggering, and it is all appropriate for scholarly research.

RQ#2 9-11) The “right interviewee” must be: _____, _____, and _____.

RQ#2 12-14) An effective interview question is: _____, _____, and _____.

RQ#2 15) True or False: The secret to conducting a successful interview is a genuine interest in what the interviewee has to say.

BEFORE GOING TO OUR SEATWORK TASK FOR TODAY, LET US FIRST WATCH THIS SHORT CLIP CONTAINING FUNNY/CRAZY INTERVIEWS.

RESEARCH PAPER: DEVELOPING YOUR RESEARCH STRATEGY It’s all basically about identifying the data you need and knowing where and how to get it. The four basic research strategies are: doing library research, doing online research, conducting interviews and conducting surveys.

RESEARCH PAPER: DEVELOPING YOUR RESEARCH STRATEGY In doing LIBRARY RESEARCH, remember the following: – Move from general to specific – the more specific it is the better – Best ones for Primary Sources: Academic Journals, Scholarly Books, Theses, Official Documents/Vertical Files – For Background/Secondary Sources: Magazines, Reference materials, Newspapers, Encyclopedias

RESEARCH PAPER: DEVELOPING YOUR RESEARCH STRATEGY TIP: If you choose to peruse through Wikipedia or other wiki sources, look to the bottom of the webpage and you’ll find the primary or more authoritative sources on the subject matter. The BEST sources are those produced AND REVIEWED by experts.

RESEARCH PAPER: DEVELOPING YOUR RESEARCH STRATEGY INTERNET RESEARCH: – The internet has an almost infinite amount of information, but not all of it (in fact, most of it) is quite unreliable – Internet info is usually quantity over quality – The best internet sources usually come from websites ending in.edu,.gov, or.org (unless it is a wiki)

RESEARCH PAPER: DEVELOPING YOUR RESEARCH STRATEGY You may use online sources, such as wikis, to BEGIN building a background for your paper, but using it for analysis and defending your arguments is ill- advised.

RESEARCH PAPER: DEVELOPING YOUR RESEARCH STRATEGY CONDUCTING INTERVIEWS: – find an expert in your chosen field/area or someone constantly immersed in it – he/she has to be knowledgeable, reliable & available

RESEARCH PAPER: DEVELOPING YOUR RESEARCH STRATEGY Remember that an Interview question must be brief, clear and focused. In other words, be direct to the point, do not use ambiguous (malabo) terms, and ask one question at a time.

RESEARCH PAPER: DEVELOPING YOUR RESEARCH STRATEGY Always take notes when interviewing people. (DUH?!) Do this rapidly, accurately and unobtrusively. You may record it on paper, on a video tape or on a digital device.

RESEARCH PAPER: DEVELOPING YOUR RESEARCH STRATEGY CONDUCTING A SURVEY – This can show you a general pattern or trend from a certain group of individuals regarding your topic – Using a survey in a HS paper is needlessly tiresome and often unreliable because of faulty design, so veer away from this for now

TASK: SW Directions: If you were to interview the following people given the corresponding topics, what questions would you ask? (Give 5 questions for each item) 1) Interviewee: Fr. RB Hizon Topic: Accepting girls in the AHS 2) Interviewee: Kobe Bryant Topic: The NBA should have teams from Europe 3) Interviewee: Bayani Fernando Topic: Improving traffic flow in the Metropolis

TASK: SW Format: Size 1 Submission: End of the session, Wednesday, September 16, 2009

ASSIGNMENT Re-read pp. 35-47 of the Anvil guide to Research Paper Writing

REMEMBER One of the important aspects of a good interview question is clarity. We shouldn’t use unnecessarily complex or ambiguous terms that might make the experience more complicated than it needs to be.

From Gotthold Ephraim Lessing “For me the greatest beauty always lies in the greatest clarity.”
