Background for William’s House Pictures from Jamestown Settlement and the colonists' fort

Arriving in Jamestown Colony by ship. Colonists arrived here in Virginia in 1607. They came from England.

Inside the fort. Houses made with thatch roofs.

Thatch – dry vegetation such as straw and water reed used to shed water away from the inner roof.

Chicken coop and outdoor fire pit.

Cellars – storing food underground to keep food fresh (substitution for refrigerators in colonial times).

Inside bedroom of house. Mattresses are made of straw.

Tobacco crop behind house and the fence around the fort.

An Anglican church, and drying a deer skin in the sun.
