3. Parris is a coward –Tries to defend Abigail –Cares little for the people –Takes his time telling the court that Abigail vanished –Cares more about his stolen money than the people who will die

4. “….private vengeance is working through this testimony!” expresses the real truth behind the trails. Giles Corey is arrested because he refuses to name the person who accused Putnam of grabbing land.

5. Hale begins to doubt the morality of the trials when he hears John Proctor’s story. Francis Nurse is terrified when Danforth insists on questioning the people who signed his petition because he promised no harm would come to them.

6. Hale denounces the proceedings of the court because he believes the testimony of Mary Warren and John Proctor. The people of Andover have rebelled and overthrown the court. It is important that Proctor confess because that will convince people the court has been just.

7. Danforth refuses to postpone the hangings because it might look as if he has wrongly executed innocent people. Giles Corey can best be described as courageous. The climax of Act IV occurs when Proctor rips up his confession. “I am not your judge, I cannot be” is the major theme of this play.
