Review for Final Exam  Exam format: - 25 problems; 5 from the last 3 chapters; 3 advanced, 3 intermediate, 19 simple - Time: Wed. Dec. 11, noon-3pm - Place: Physics, Room 306 - Make-up exam: Thur., same time and place  Test materials: - Pencil, eraser, paper, and calculator - formulae sheet provided  Responsible for: - Class notes for Chapters 1-14, 16, 17.5-6, 18.1-2 - All homework assignments, previous tests - Example problems done in class

Material Covered 1/3: Units, significant figures, scalars, vectors, components of a vector 2/4: 1D/2D kinematics (trans.), free-fall, projectile motion, relative velocity 5: Forces, Newton’s Laws (translational) 6: Friction, tension, springs, uniform circular motion, a c, period 7/8: Work, KE, PE, Conservation of Energy, Power 9: Impulse, 1D/2D Collisions, Conservation of Momentum 10: Rotational kinematics, v T, a T, K R, moment of inertia 11: Rotational dynamics, torque, Newton’s Laws, Conservation of Angular Momentum

12: Gravitational force, Kepler’s Laws, gravitational potential, escape speed 13: Simple Harmonic Motion, spring, pendulum, damped harmonic motion, forced harmonic motion 14: Waves, speed of sound, Doppler Effect, superposition and interference of waves, standing waves, beats 16: Temperature, density, pressure, thermal expansion, specific heat, heat transfer - convection, conduction, and radiation, 3 rd law of thermodynamics 17: Latent heat and phase changes (17.5-6) 18: 0 th and 1 st laws of thermodynamics (18.1-2)

Example: Linear Thermal Expansion A cylindrical drinking glass is placed inside another cylindrical glass. The two just fit, because the outer radius (0.035 m) of the inside glass is equal to the inner radius of the outside glass. The glass inside is then filled with cold water at 5 °C, while the outside glass is heated to 45 °C by running hot water over it. Find the separation between the two glasses. Solution: Given: r 01 =r 02 =r 0 =0.035m T f1 =5 °C, T f2 =45 °C, from Table 12.1  =8.5x10 -6 C° -1

Method: inner glass contracts while other glass expands Gap= But T 01 =T 02 =T 0 =? r0r0 r f1 r f2
