Gov't - 16 Sept 2015 EQ: Why does participating in government involve being active in civic life by knowing our rights and shared values? LO: wwbat assess the the mean and role of a citizen within society. Do Now: Think about what it means to be a citizen. Do citizens have any rights? Do they have responsibilities? Where do those come from?

1 -In a democracy officials must base their decisions on the law. Citizens of an non- democratic countries must abide by their government's decisions. -Abraham Lincoln- US gov't is "of the people, by the people, [and] for the people" -Advantage of having elected representatives: They hold office only as long as the citizens want them to.

2 -Volunteering contributes to the common good -People under 18 may help in an election by stuffing envelopes with information to send to voters. -Voting is an example of a citizen's right

3 -A fair trial includes : witnesses. proof beyond a reasonable doubt. a jury of peers. -Duties of citizens include obeying the laws. defending the nation. attending school. - We play many different social roles in society, These roles we play change over time.
