World Hunger There are about 7 billion people in the world With an estimated 868 million hungry people, 12% (or 1 in 8) are hungry Almost all the hungry people (852 million) live in developing countries, representing 15% of the population of developing counties There are 16 million people undernourished in developed countries

World Hunger Children who are poorly nourished suffer up to 160 days of illness each year Poor nutrition plays a role in at least half of the 10.9 million child deaths each year (5 million deaths) Malnutrition, as measured by stunting, affects 32.5% of children in developing countries

Getting better or worse? Global population growth projections of 2–3 billion people over the next 40 years, combined with changing diets, will result in a predicted increase in food demand of 70 % by 2050

Can we feed everyone? The world produces enough food to feed everyone World agriculture produces 17% more calories per person today than it did 30 years ago, despite a 70 percent population increase This is enough to provide everyone in the world with at least 2,720 kilocalories (kcal) per person per day

Can we feed everyone? Per capita food waste by consumers in Europe and North-America is estimated at 95-115 kg/year, while this figure in Sub-Saharan Africa and South/Southeast Asia is only 6- 11 kg/year
