Introduction, background 04NOV201 5 GSA Prague 2 European Commission (EC) in cooperation with European Space Agency (ESA) and GSA Agency are governing and developing 2 systems in the field of GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite Systems): Galileo EGNOS – Satellite Based Augmentation System (SBAS) – Basic (Open Service) in operation since 01OCT2009 – Safety of Life (SoL) Service – the most important for aviation, certified 02MAR2011 (ICAO, EUROCONTROL)
3
Main benefits of using EGNOS in aviation 04NOV201 5 GSA Prague 3 Safety – reduction of the risks – reduction in the workload of pilots and air traffic control dispatchers Ecology – Optimizing flight routes – Reduction of noise – Limited impact on the landscape Economy, quality of the service – Less number of traffic irregularities – Cost savings

EGNOS has enabled GNSS-based instrument approach procedures 04NOV201 5 GSA Prague 4 LPV Guaranteed vertical accuracy corresponding to ILS CAT I No. of airports (and heliports) in Europe with published LPV approach procedures is rapidly growing:

7
How to increase EGNOS utilization in Eastern Europe? 04NOV201 5 GSA Prague 7 Typical case of „Chicken/Egg problem“ But, how to break this „magic circle“?...one of possible ways: – To define, design and certify standards for training of pilots for safe, reliable and effective use of the GNSS technology – Trained pilots and well-prepared air operators will naturally create pressure for airports/heliports to „wake up“ and build environment for utilization of this know-how Creation of the CaBilAvi project (Capacity Building for Aviation Stakeholders in Europe and beyond)
