Enabling Grids for E-sciencE EGEE-III INFSO-RI-222667 Business SSC for EGI – SSC Workshop – 5-6 May 2009 2 Business SSC Overview (1 of 2) Rationale –Evolved beyond “dissemination” - time for a dedicated commercial team to provide “marketing and sales” services for the substantial research developments achieved (as per any viable technology) Several examples of how companies have profited from or have been created as a result of pre-competitive access to e-Infrastructures (e.g. EGEE) Adoption = CGGVeritas, Imense Ltd Market Solutions = Constellation Technologies, Maat-g Collaboration = 8 EGEE Business Associates Pre-competitive applications = 12 business use cases The Business SSC is designed to: –Help commercial companies to exploit software, support and services based on the outcomes of EGEE and developments within EGI (i.e. UMD, components and services) –Provide feedback to EGI and NGIs developers aiding in concrete business exploitation and increased sustainability –Serve as a comprehensive SSC for any kind of business community

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE EGEE-III INFSO-RI-222667 3 The four main areas –Interaction with EGI MCB and other SSCs: Gather business user requirements and challenges through user and enterprise community engagement –Company Support: Create a network of companies interested in offering technical support to UMD and other EGI software/services on a payment basis Offer opportunities for joint collaborations Entry point to setting up pre-competitive business applications Develop a training and certification programme (similar to the Red-Hat or Cisco certification programme) –“Sales and Marketing” department for EGI and NGIs: Develop marketing material Showcase use cases and best practices Develop market analysis and business plans –Management and Cross-Communication Interaction Business SSC Overview (2 of 2) Business SSC for EGI – SSC Workshop – 5-6 May 2009

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE EGEE-III INFSO-RI-222667 4 Participation & Governance NGIs to Support Business SSC –Open to all who are interested Collaborating Projects –BEinGRID (Gridipedia), NESSI, OGF-Europe’s Industry Expert Group, RESERVOIR Coordination with DEISA and PRACE Early Discussions –No formal discussions have begun to take place outside of core group designing the preliminary proposal Governing Body –One partner will take overall leadership of the Business SSC to serve as “Coordinator” as well as an overall Mgt Board SSC will support all NGIs wishing to be involved –Part of the activities will be dedicated to increasing involvement as NGIs priorities change, develop or become more mature Business SSC for EGI – SSC Workshop – 5-6 May 2009

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE EGEE-III INFSO-RI-222667 55 Technical Organisation “Business Task Force” –A specific group will be defined within the SSC to handle more technical related activities Gathering Requirements –It would be fundamental to have a contact point within the overall MCB for liaison of business user requirements EGI Interfaces –If the above is implemented, then no additional interface “groups” other than those listed are foreseen Portal –If a portal is provided, the majority of the support would come from within the SSC together with the collaborating NGI Business SSC for EGI – SSC Workshop – 5-6 May 2009

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE EGEE-III INFSO-RI-222667 6 Relations with other SSCs Horizontal SSC Specific SSC relations –Training SSC Coordination and communication leveraging and streamlining efforts with Business SSC’s training and certification programme for technicians with an expertise in UMD and other Grid technologies –Dissemination SSC Leveraging contact databases and media outlets Collaboration for services within current GridTalk (iSGTW, GridCafe, GridCasts, GridGuide, GridBriefings, etc.) –Individual SSCs It could be foreseen to have a dedicated contact person for each SSC as scientific applications often translate to a commercial vertical market Individual activities will have a dedicated person for funnelling scientific development Applications, services or technology with commercial exploitation potential Media and Technology Transfer Offices/Knowledge Exchange Networks Business SSC for EGI – SSC Workshop – 5-6 May 2009

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE EGEE-III INFSO-RI-222667 7 Business SSC Effort Overall (open for discussion) –Total of 7 FTE 5 FTE funded by EC 2 FTE funded by EGI/NGI Commercial Partners are aware that some resources (TBD) might need to be provided alongside requested funding as a sign of good faith or commitment to the cause EGI.org and NGIs –Requested to support a light-weight coordination activity providing a wide range of services –Funding for support is expected to rely principally on the EC Business SSC for EGI – SSC Workshop – 5-6 May 2009
