What is phonics? An approach to teaching reading and writing. Phoneme: the sound Grapheme: the written representation Digraph: two letters making one phoneme, e.g. ‘sh’ in ship. Segment: split a word into phonemes in order to spell Blend: draw individual phonemes together to read

Daily guided reading sessions for pupils to apply their reading skills Timetabled visits to the library and encouragement to visit at break/lunchtimes Home readers with a wide selection of texts to choose from Listening to stories/exciting stimulus during literacy lessons.

Spelling: How can I help at home? Use some of the strategies we just practised at home Limit the number of words to five a week to ensure success and enable deeper learning Support your child learning spellings in context, e.g. in a given sentence, generating sentences for each word, saying a sentence which include the focused word Talking about spelling and expectating the correct application in writing once a word has been learned.
