CTC228 Nov 18 2015

Rest of the Semester...  Next time (Mon 23 Nov) – Go over test, prep lightning talks  Then (Wed Nov 25) – Class canceled (so you can work on your lightning talks at home)  And then (Mon Nov 30) – Give lightning talks  Finally (Wed Dec 2) – Review for Final  Scheduled Final is Wed Dec 16 (last day of finals!) – Monday Dec 7 possible alternative » Read through Chapter 11!

Today... “Midterm” 2 Small Business Networks - Computers - Switch - AP - Router

Chap 11: Supporting a Small Business

Small Business Network Needs Computers – probably Windows Switch, Wireless Access Point, Router – probably all-in-one, possible from ISP Internet Connection – might have to pay extra for “business” class Internet connection, which may include a static IP address

Computers – probably Windows But it could be OSX, or Linux, or maybe they only use Chromebooks or iPads! All modern operating systems support TCP/IP networking Computers may need to be configured to use DHCP, which varies depending on which operating system you are running.

Switch, Wireless Access Point, Router Usually an all-in-one device May be given by ISP – But might buy your own if you want features This is what most of us have at home and sometimes we colloquially call it a “wireless router” – But each component can be configured separately

Step One: Change the login password

Switch configuration By default, not much configuration needed But you might want to turn on port security based on MAC addresses *

Wireless Access Point configuration Need to change SSID (a.k.a. the network name) ex. from “Linksys Router” to “Porto's Bakery” Need to change security mode from None or WEP to WPA2 Need to change Pre Shared Key (PSK, a.k.a. Wifi password) May need to change the channel*

Change SSID

Use WPA2 with good password

Wifi Channels

Wifi Analyzer for Android

Router Configuration Needed amount of configuration may vary from “Just change the default password” to “What a royal pain in neck” May need to set up firewall rules May need to set up NAT May need to set up DHCP May need to set up port forwarding May need to set up some sort of remote access

Firewall Rules

DHCP

Remote Access Telnet and ssh – allows remote “text-only” mode VNC – Allows remote control of a desktop Windows Remote Desktop Assistance – Similar to VNC VPN- Virtual Private Network

Telnet

Fun telnet telnet towel.blinkenlights.nl – Star Wars telnet -t vtnt miku.acm.uiuc.edu – Nyan Cat

Remote Desktop

VNC – Virtual Network Computing

VPN Allows remote access to a particular network Creates an encrypted tunnel through the Internet Even if far away, the connecting computer appears to be on the “internal” network*

VPN
