Introduction Proposal by STW 37 (January 2006) to MSC 81 (May 2006) for a comprehensive review MSC 81 endorsed the STW 37 proposal MSC 81 instructed STW 38 to define issues to be reviewed and advise MSC accordingly definedprepared STW 38 defined issues and prepared the list of areas in the STCW Convention and Code identified for the comprehensive review approvedendorsed instructed MSC 83 (May 2007) approved the principles, endorsed the scope of the review and the list of areas identified and instructed STW 39 to commence the review January 20114 Maritime Training & Human Element Section IMO

Comprehensive review of the STCW Convention and Code STW 39 (January 2008) commenced the review as instructed by MSC 83 To fast track the review, the Maritime Safety Committee authorized two STW Intersessional Working Group (ISWG) meetings. ISWG meetings held from: 1 to 5 September 2008; and 22 to 26 September 2009 STW 40 (January 2009) and STW 41 (January 2010) continued work on the comprehensive review of the STCW Convention and Code January 20118 Maritime Training & Human Element Section IMO

Familiarization with the 2010 Manila Amendments Comprehensive Review MSC 86 (May 2009) authorized STW 41 (January 2010) to finalize and submit the draft amendments directly to the Diplomatic Conference to be held in June 2010 in Manila, the Philippines STW 41 finalized the draft amendments for consideration by the Diplomatic Conference in Manila 2010 January 20119 Maritime Training & Human Element Section IMO

Familiarization with the 2010 Manila Amendments The Diplomatic Conference in Manila (21 to 25 June 2010) adopted amendments to the STCW Convention and Code - named the ‘2010 Manila Amendments’ Date of Acceptance of “2010 Manila amendments” - 1 July 2011 Entry into Force of “2010 Manila Amendments” - 1 January 2012 Details of the amendments will be provided in the presentations that follow January 201110 Maritime Training & Human Element Section IMO
