1 ISSUES Conference MAA, Carriage House January 30-31, 2014

2 Goals To generate seed ideas for ways in which the STEM professional societies and educational associations can collaborate in efforts to effect substantial change and improvement in undergraduate STEM education, and To develop a plan for integrating the efforts of the STEM disciplinary societies around new faculty workshops, by creating mechanisms that foster communication and support among faculty who have attended professional development workshops.

Enabling Strong Professional Pathways as well as Scientific and Quantitative Literacy Through Undergraduate STEM Education STEM Undergraduates Mirror National Demographics All undergraduate teaching aligns with research on learning and practice of the disciplines – focus on faculty – Importance of early experiences Productive DBER Communities Fully Integrated with Practioners and Sciences; STEM Departments Support Inclusive Communities/Cultures of Teaching and Learning; departments are committed to improving their students teaching and learning Robust and diverse Professional Pathways for All STEM Graduates – importance of all students understanding the diverse application of STEM and where it fits into civilization and its activities; importance of early years STEM Research Communities rebalance priorities to place more value education, education is part of faculty identity STEM Research communities value demographic diversity and full range of professional opportunities that use STEM
