3 2. D EVELOPMENT BUILDS ON EARLIER LEARNING. The skills a child learns at 2 builds directly on what they learned at age 1. Development follows an orderly step- by-step pattern Walk before running Speaks with simple words before speaking in sentences.

4 3. D EVELOPMENT PROCEEDS AT AN INDIVIDUAL RATE : Style and Rate of growth differs from one child to another Some children walk at 10 months others at 12-14 months

Independence Youth- learn to feed and dress yourself Teens- choosing friends, making decision Young adult- career choice, living on own Retirement- vacationing, funds, what to do with no work Elderly- fight to stay in home, stay independent
