E NDANGERED S PECIES A CT OF 1973 I NTRODUCED TO THE S ENATE IN J UNE 1973 AND WAS SIGNED INTO LAW BY P RESIDENT N IXON ON D ECEMBER 28,1973 M AJOR A MENDMENT Y EARS : 1978, 1979, 1982, 1985, 1988 I T IS AN INTERNATIONAL TREATY WITH THE HELP IF THE CITIES A CT F UNCTION : PROTECT CRITICALLY ENDANGERED SPECIES FROM EXTINCTION AS A RESULT OF ECONOMIC GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT WITH INADEQUATE CARE FOR THE ENVIRONMENT, DESTROYING THE HABITATS FOR ANIMALS.

I T ALSO FOCUSES ON REPAIRING THE DESTROYED HABITATS THAT HAVE CAUSED MANY ANIMAL SPECIES TO BE PLACED ON THE BRINK OF EXTINCTION. T HE ESA IS REGULATED BY THE F ISH AND W ILDLIFE S ERVICE (FWS), IN THE D EPARTMENT OF THE I NTERIOR, AND NOAA' S N ATIONAL M ARINE F ISHERIES S ERVICE (NOAA F ISHERIES S ERVICE ), IN THE D EPARTMENT OF C OMMERCE

T HE ESA IS REGULATED BY THE F ISH AND W ILDLIFE S ERVICE (FWS), IN THE D EPARTMENT OF THE I NTERIOR, AND NOAA' S N ATIONAL M ARINE F ISHERIES S ERVICE (NOAA F ISHERIES S ERVICE ), IN THE D EPARTMENT OF C OMMERCE T HE POSITIVE EFFECTS OF THIS A CT : AS OF 2011, FIFTY ONE SPECIES HAVE BEEN DELISTED, T WENTY - THREE AS A RESULT OF RECOVERY, SIX DUE TO DISCOVERY OF NEW POPULATIONS, AND TWENTY - FIVE HAVE BEEN DOWN LISTED FROM “ ENDANGERED ” TO “ THREATENED ”.
