WHAT IS THE VOLVO OCEAN RACE Round the world ocean race held every 2-3 years, began in 1972. Originally named the Whitbread race before Volvo sponsorship Typically 7-10 teams funded both privately and through sponsorship Boat used: The Volvo Open 70, arguably the fastest mono-hull in the world, capable of speeds up to 40knts Race format is usually 8-10 individually scored distance races with short course racing at each stopover Individual legs range in distance, total distance is typically around 40,000 miles All entries are professionally crewed The race usually takes about 9 months total
3
WHY THE VOR? I have been sailing competitively my entire life, currently a collegiate sailor In 2004 the race organizers began making the race more available to spectators After watching footage and talking to former competitors this is a race I would really like to do some day Sailing is not an easy sport to market or promote
4
SOME OF THE PROBLEMS Choosing a topic Formatting the site, especially tables How can I make this site navigable to someone with no knowledge of the race What are the most important aspects? WinScp (getting everything to load properly)
5
THINGS THAT I LEARNED Everything takes much longer than anticipated Helpful to go into the project with a rough design Most importantly I learned how much I don’t know about web design, and share-point designer Usage of code view
6
SITE LAYOUT Home page Proposal (why I chose the VOR and goals for site) PowerPoint Excel (results from last race, leg by leg with totals and averages) JavaScript (speed and distance calculator) Pictures (through VOR home) Videos (very important, it is what drew my to the race) Links My Website
