The Northeast

Northeast 5% of U.S. landmass Contains 20% of population in US
The Northeast has 2 parts: NEW ENGLAND MID ATLANTIC Called America’s Gateway, because most European immigrants first settled in this region

Megalopolis Megalopolis: an area where several large cities and surrounding areas grow together. Nation’s capital, Washington, DC, is in the Northeast Example: Boston to Washington DC is a Megalopolis – New York = cultural and financial center Approx. 500 miles Railroads, highways, and air transportation link the region

The Midwest

The Midwest Located in the middle of the US
It’s referred to as America’s heartland ¼ of the US lives in the Midwest Largely flat plains are a feature of the region Numerous waterways are located in the Midwest: Great Lakes and Mississippi River with its many tributaries

Midwest The nation’s “breadbasket”
Fertile soil Adequate rain fall Favorable climate Agriculture is the foundation of the region Waterways make the Midwest a trade, transportation and distribution center.

The South

The South 1/3 of population lives in the South
Called the Confederacy during the Civil War. (Lost the Civil War) The South is referred to as the “sunbelt” because of its warm climate Metropolitan areas:(cities) large cities and nearby suburbs and towns are common in the South region

The West Stretches from the Great Plains to the Pacific Ocean, also includes Alaska & Hawaii ½ the land mass of US is located in West The most populated state is located in the West: California Los Angeles is the 2nd largest city in the U.S. The Colorado River has aided in the growth of the West
