File Management Review Windows Explorer ► Right click on start menu and select Explore ► Left side shows computer structure ► Right side shows current folder (display can be modified) Name (can add file extension) Size Type Date Modified/Date Created ► Different views (Thumbnails, Tiles, Icons, List, Details) and their uses ► The status bar is your friend ► Looking at Folder or File Properties

File Management Review File Size ► 1,000 bytes = 1 kilobyte (KB) ► 1,000,000 bytes = 1 megabyte (MB) ► 1,000,000,000 bytes = 1 gigabyte (GB) ► 1,000,000,000,000 bytes = 1 terabyte (TB) The Rule of Thousands = one thousand bytes is a kilobyte, one thousand kilobytes is a megabyte,... ► Floppy Disk = 1.44 MB ► Zip Disk = 100 MB ► CDs = either 720 MB or 800 MB ► Hard Drives = any size (typically above 2 GB) ► Jump Drives = from 32 MB – 1 GB

File Management Review Moving Files within Windows Explorer ► Drag and Drop – most unreliable due to human error ► Copy and Paste – good for creating backups or taking a file off your computer to work with at another location ► Cut and Paste – takes original file and moves to another location ► Keyboard shortcuts for actions (Ctrl + C, V, X) ► Remember Where you put it What you moved ► 3 Ways to select multiple files at once (to move or work with) Hold the Control key (CTRL) + Left click for individual selection Hole the Shift key + Left Click to select many at once Hit CTRL + A to select all items in folder

Zipping Files ► Zip files – a virtual folder that compresses several files into one allowing for easy transfer (file extension =.zip) ► Creating a zip file in Windows Explorer Select file or files to be zipped Right click on them Choose Send To Choose Compressed Folder Name Zip file

Advantages to Zip files ► Makes email attachments easy ► Compresses file sizes to make smaller – easier to transfer, email, or transport ► Universally accepted file format ► Can be passworded for security

Email ► Hundreds of different methods to access email Two major divisions ► Web-based – accessed through website ► Program-based – accessed through program such as Outlook, Eudora, Netscape, etc. ► Can be either Free (e.g., Hotmail, Yahoo) or purchased (e.g., AOL, Comcast)
