3 What is M/E health? Definition: The ability to handle the stresses and changes of everyday life. What are influences on your mental and emotional health?

4 Influences on your Personality Heredity: Passing along of biological traits from parents to children. Environment: Family, friends, neighborhood, school, weather, etc. Behavior: How you as an individual acts.

5 Signs of M/E Health Empathy Identify with and sharing another person’s feelings. Resilience The ability to recover from problems of loss.

7 Self-Concept vs. Self-Esteem Self-Concept The way you view yourself overall. Physically Your abilities How you feel you fit in As a student, friend, teams Self-Esteem How you feel about yourself. Do you like yourself? Do you feel good about who you are? Confidence around others Responsibility

8 Benefits of Self-Esteem Optimism Having a positive attitude about the future. Give an example of optimism. Confidence Belief in your ability to do what you set out to do. Give an example of confidence.

9 How can we build Self-Esteem? Set realistic goals Focus on your strengths and work to improve them. Ask for help Accept that perfection is not achievable.

10 Quick Write! An emotion is a feeling that comes about based on different situations in life. In two minutes, list as many different emotions that you can think of in your packet. Below are two examples to get you started. Happiness Joy

11 How can you manage your emotions in healthy ways?

12 What is Stress? Positive Stress Stress that can help you reach your goals. Trying out for a sports team of school club. Distress (Negative) Stress that prevents you from doing what you need to do, or stress that causes discomfort. Getting into an argument with a friend or family member.

14 Take-Home Challenge Think about a time you felt stress (positive or negative). Describe the situation, how you felt physically or mentally and how you managed your feelings. There will also be a short quiz next class on what we learned today.

15 Do-Now Activity Take out your homework. If you would like to, you may discuss your stressful situation with the class.

16 What are M/E disorders? These are illnesses that affect a person’s thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Causes Drug use Diseases Traumatic brain injuries Genetics Emotional stressors

17 Quick Write! On pages 160-161 there is a list of different mental and emotional disorders colored in green. Pick one disorder and write a short description of the disorder.

18 Suicide Suicide is the act of killing oneself on purpose.

19 When and where do we get help for M/E disorders? When: As soon as a a disorder is recognized OR as soon as they personally feel they need help. Where? Resources Referral

20 You fell in love with bridges, but never touched the water. You fell in love with gardens, but never touched a flower. You fell in love with seasons, but never watched the snow melt. You fell in love with everyone else, except yourself.

21 Do-Now Activity Write down everything that you had for breakfast this morning. Underneath that list of food and drink, write a few sentences describing whether or not you feel it was a healthy breakfast and why.

33 How your body digests food Digestion: the process in which the body breaks down food. Digestive System: the group of organs that work together to break down foods into substances that your cells can use.

35 Excretory System: Group of organs that work together to remove wastes. Solid Waste (Feces) Made up of solid food that the body cannot digest. Any water, vitamins, minerals, or salts left in the food are absorbed by the colon. Liquid Waste (Urine) Kidneys produce urine and control the amounts of water and salt in the body. Kidneys send urine to the bladder to be stored and removed.

38 What does determine a healthy weight? Gender Age Height Body Type Growth Patterns Genetics Healthy weight is not a set number, but a set of numbers in a range.

39 Body Mass Index (BMI) A method for assessing body size by taking you height and weight into account. On page 129 in the book, there is a green connect to math box in the top right corner. Using that box as a guide, calculate your own BMI. Once you have a number, look at the charts on page 130 and compare your number to the charts. What do you think could make someone’s BMI higher even though that person is still healthy? (Hint: Mr. Leh could have a high BMI but is still healthy)

42 Eating Disorders Eating Disorders are extreme eating behaviors that can lead to serious illness or death. Anorexia Nervosa: starving yourself Bulimia Nervosa: eating a large amount of food and then purging. (throwing up) Binge Eating: when a person repeatedly eats too much food at one time.
