3 American Revolution & the Vietnam War Washington leading forces at Trenton and American troops in Vietnam The American Revolution is often compared to the Vietnam War. Which of the following statements accurately describe both wars? I. The local population fought against larger, more powerful overseas-based forces. II. While the 18th century British and 20th century Americans controlled most cities, rural areas tended to be controlled by the colonial American forces and the Viet Cong/North Vietnamese forces. III. Mass surrenders of troops took place in both wars. IV. Peace accords in both wars were signed in Paris. V. Guerrilla tactics were significant in both wars. (A) I and II only (B) I, II, IV and V only (C) II, III, IV, and V only (D) all of the statements are accurate (E) none of the statements are accurate Answer: (B) I, II, IV and V only Explanation: In both the American Revolution and the Vietnam War, an undermanned, less organized local population was able to eventually defeat a worldwide power after years of fighting. Backcountry villages were often under the influence of local forces in both wars while the British in the Revolutionary War and the Americans/South Vietnamese in the Vietnam War exerted more control in urban areas in South Vietnam. Guerrilla tactics proved effective in both wars. While there were major surrenders of both British (5700 men at Saratoga) and Americans (5000 at Charleston) in the Revolutionary War, the Vietnam War did not feature any major surrender of troops. The Treaty of Paris settled the Revolutionary War, while the Paris Peace Accords helped bring about the end of the Vietnam War.
