The North Carolina Academic Scholars Program The NC Academic Scholars Program recognizes students who qualify for this special recognition in the following ways: · Student will be designated by the State Board of Education as a N.C. Academic Scholar · Student will receive a seal of recognition attached to the diploma · Student may receive special recognition at graduation exercises and other community events · Student may use this special recognition in applying to post-secondary institutions To be recognized as a North Carolina Scholar, the following requirements apply: Have a cumulative four-year unweighted GPA of 3.5 and the following courses (24 Units): · 4 units of English · 4 math units (Algebra I, Algebra II, geometry, + a higher level math for which Algebra II is a prerequisite) · 3 units of science (a physics or chemistry course, biology, and Earth/Environmental Science) · 3 social studies (World History, U.S. History, and Civics/Econ) · 2 units in the same foreign language · 1 unit of Health and Physical Education · 1 unit of Career and Technical Education · 1 unit of Arts Education (music, art, drama) · 5 elective units (must include at least two Second-level or advanced courses

8. What is AP? A curriculum sponsored by the College Board which offers standardized courses to high school students that are generally recognized to be equivalent to undergraduate courses in college. Participating colleges grant credit to students who obtained high enough scores on the exams to qualify. These courses tend to be much for rigorous than a general course.. 10. What is Career and Technical Education (CTE)? Career and technical education (CTE) prepares both youth and adults for a wide range of careers and further educational opportunities. These careers may require varying levels of education—including industry- recognized credentials, postsecondary certificates, and two- and four-year degrees. What is a concentration in CTE? A concentration in Career and Technical Education at Swain County High School requires at least four credits in a career cluster. Three of the technical credits come from among Foundational courses. One of the foundational courses must be a second level or starred (*) course. The fourth technical credit can be either a Foundational or Enhancement course.

Provides students the opportunity to earn articulated credit (college credit) Prepares students to be College and Career Ready Equips students with Core academic skills Employability skills Job-specific, technical skills related to a specific career cluster Earn honors credit (an additional quality point) in some courses (Horticulture II, Health Science II, Principles of Technology II, etc.)

20. Did You Know… A lot of nursing schools require CNA certification prior to applying for admission to their program. If they don’t require CNA, a lot will use whether or not you have a CNA when making acceptance decisions. Health Science II includes CPR/FirstAid/AED certification. Health Sciences students can seek EMT—Basic Certification as a senior.

22. In Foods II, you have the option of earning the ServSafe National Restaurant Association Industry Certification. Teen Living is broken into 6 “mini classes” (2-3 weeks each) in a one semester course. It is a great class for 9 th and 10 th graders to “try out” the different areas of Family and Consumer Sciences. Principles of Technology can count as your physical science and/or 4 th math credit required for graduation for some students. Did You Know…

23. By taking carpentry classes at SCHS, you can gain up to 16 credit hours at Southwestern Community College. Carpentry I, II, and III are two-block periods each day. 80% of your time in carpentry class is hands-on; you will be standing up and moving. Students planning a career in almost any engineering or architecture field will be required in college to take drafting. Machinists, carpenters, welders, etc. will need to know how to read drawings and have a basic understanding of the use of the various uses of drafting. Did You Know…
