Adding and Subtracting To multiply or divide radicals they have to have the same index (the little number before the root symbol) To add or subtract radicals they have to have the same index AND the same radicand (the number under the root symbol)

IMPORTANT If each radical in a radical expression is not in simplest form, simplify them first. Then use the distributive property, whenever possible, to further simplify the expression.
