Spanish American War Summary Causes-Cuba is Spain’s colony. The Cubans want independence. Cuban rebels burn US sugar plantations in Cuba forcing the President to send the USS Maine to protect US interests in Cuba. When the ship is destroyed, the US goes to war with Spain and wins.
