UNIT 3 LESSON: REFRESH

CULTURE  Culture is comprised of the shared practices, technologies, attitudes, and behaviors transmitted by society.  Culture includes food preferences, architecture, and land use.  Elements of culture that we have looked at and will look at include: Ideas surrounding practices, ethnicity, gender, language, and religion.  It’s important to be SPECIFIC when you are talking about culture  that’s a broad term, so you need to break down the aspects of culture.  When in doubt, think about the chapters; folk vs. pop, race/ethnicity & gender, language, and religion

CULTURE & GLOBALIZATION  Globalization is influencing cultural interactions & change  Communication (the internet) are reshaping and accelerating interactions among people and places and actually changing cultural practices.  Cultural has a hearth, and then diffuses outwards from that hearth in different ways  It should also be clear that cultural patterns & process vary by place and region.  The use of language, religion, and ethnicity create a sense of place  We can represent language, ethnicity, and religion on maps  Things like ethnicity and gender; where they are on a map and even language, reflect the cultural attitudes towards certain groups

CULTURE IS SEEN IN THE PHYSICAL  Language, religion, ethnicity, and gender all play a role in understanding landscapes that are symbolic of the culture (signs, architecture, and sacred sites  we’ll learn about those).  Culture landscapes are amalgamations (composites) of physical features, agricultural and industrial practices, religious and linguistic characteristics, and other expressions of culture  like architecture  Think about cemeteries; not everyone has the same type of burial practice  Think about the language and symbols used on signs, buildings, etc.  Think about how Indigenous populations may view the land vs. European settlers

RELIGION  Religion are “belief systems and sets of practices that incorporate the ideas of a power higher than humans.”  You’ll find that religion will often influence how genders are viewed/treated  Plays a role in a lot of governments  Language plays a strong role in religion; usually belief system sacred book/text out of a specific language  If not written language, verbal, signs, or pictures usually a way of communicating the religion  Organized Religions are “when belief systems and associated rituals are systematically arranged and formally established”  We’ll spend more time on organized religions in this class.

MAJOR RELIGIONS  We use the term “major” based on the number of adherents  Major religions often have many off-shots  Example: Christianity has Catholicism, Greek Orthodox, Baptist.  Example: Islam has Shi’a and Shi’ite.  Major religions by numbers:  Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, and Buddhism  Judaism comes up a lot as well. It’s what called an Abrahamic religion, that’s the founder (Abraham). Christianity and Islam have the same roots in Judaism  Hinduism is the oldest religion, Buddhism emerged out of Hinduism  As an aside, a Muslim is a practitioner of Islam.
