What are my choices? How do I know if college is right for me?

WORKPLACE begin your job immediately potential for movement or training earn money right away possibly apply to college/university in the future after you have saved money

look for an employer who is willing to hire and train you 2 − 5 year process, depending on the trade accumulation of necessary hours earn wages while you learn up to 20% in−class component at a college at the end of your training, write a standard provincial exam APPRENTICESHIP

UNIVERSITY 3 and 4 year degrees lecture style, large classes, academic learning approximately $6500 - $8500 per year, depending upon the program cost of residence is up to $6000 without a meal plan and up to $11 000 with a meal plan potential for Co-op Destinations after university: job post-graduate university degrees (i.e. - Masters, Ph.D.) college diplomas (undergraduate and post-graduate) trades

COLLEGE PROGRAMS Certificate Programs two semesters or one year i.e. Veterinary Assistant, Dental Assistant, Personal Support Worker at Durham College approximately $2500 − $3500 per year tuition lab fees are extra

WHAT SHOULD I CONSIDER IF I KNOW THE PROGRAM I WANT TO TAKE? most colleges have a course calendar published every year (fewer each year) calendars contain a list of programs offered along with entrance requirements requirements may vary from college to college Highly Competitive Programs – check cutoff average & course requirements

HOW TO GAIN ENTRANCE TO A COLLEGE? OSSD (Ontario Secondary School Diploma) (30 credits, 40 hours of community service & Literacy Test) qualification for specific programs may vary some programs may require that the applicant meet specific admission criteria these may include: specific courses, essays, medical forms, or testing These requirements are listed as admission requirements in the individual college calendars.

ONTARIO COLLEGE APPLICATION SERVICE (OCAS) applications are completed online and are forwarded to the colleges OCAS processes applications and acceptances and acts as liaison between the applicant and the college OCAS processes applications for ONTARIO colleges only applicant is allowed to apply to 5 different colleges/programs and no more than 3 program choices per college

HOW MUCH WILL IT COST TO APPLY TO COLLEGE? application fee is $95 = 5 college choices (no more than three programs at the same college) the date the payment is received at OCAS will be the date your application is received at OCAS payment − online, phone or payment form using VISA or MASTER CARD, or mail a certified cheque or money order to OCAS made payable to the Ontario College Application Service (OCAS)

February 1 st – Equal Consideration Deadline To be considered on an equal basis with other applicants, your application and application processing fee must be received at our office by February 1st. After February 1st, applications are considered on a first-come, first-served basis, providing there are still vacancies in the program(s) of your choice. Colleges release offers to applicants. Earliest date to confirm an offer of admission. February 1 st – Earliest Offer Date offers continue until programs are filled or wait lists are established

SCHOOL RESPONSIBILITY − GRADES FORWARDING PROCESS Mid−November − Durham Board sends a transcript of student’s mark history and current courses to OCAS Mid−February − final marks for the 1 st semester are forwarded to OCAS April 22 nd − 27 th mid-term marks early July − final marks forwarded late August − final data transmission

conduct the necessary research by consulting college web-sites/course calendars, parents and guidance counsellors to decide on college program choices meet with college specific admission deadlines (i.e. for the submission of portfolios, interviews, auditions, etc.) complete the online application and pay the application processing fee verify that all information provided on the Online application is correct and complete RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE APPLICANT
