4. BROADEN your SEARCH to INCREASE your ODDS “If you are only concentrating on SARNIA, you must realize that the odds of employment in your field will be greatly limited, and there is a high probability you will not be successful” Where are the “hot” locations for process/power engineers in Canada? In Dec 2011 – “Over the past 90 days, Recruiters placed more than 18,000 new job ads online at an 11% year-over-year increase. Most job ads were for openings located in Western Canada, representing more than 17,000 of the ads placed for Engineers. Central Canada saw a decline in hiring demand over the past 90 days versus the same time period last year. Western Canada, however, saw a 29% year-over-year increase in the volume of job ads.” “ The demand is going to escalate dramatically in the next few years for power engineers in the pulp and paper industry in New Brunswick, the massive oil sands projects in Alberta and at electrical plants across Canada.” Indeed Job Search – Power Engineers – Sarnia versus Fort McMurray Indeed Job Search – Power Engineers – Sarnia versus Fort McMurray

Reality Check! To take part in the 3 rd Class portion of the PETC program, the TSSA has said that only CERTIFIED 4 TH CLASS POWER ENGINEERS will be allowed to continue into the 4 th, 5 th & 6 th terms of the PETC program. You cannot become a certified 4 th Class Power Engineer without the additional 3 months industry steam time. You must do whatever you have to do to secure that steam time!!!
17
Reality Check! Be aware of your competition All Power Engineering programs across Ontario are searching for the same steam time opportunities as you. You need to beat them to the opportunity! DO NOT DELAY! With the decrease in the price of the barrel of oil, CPET opportunities are scarce. Soon they will be trying to get a volunteer steam time opportunity. You need to secure yours before they flood the market. DO NOT DELAY!
