2. Content Development In Grade 1, students reason about shapes. They describe and classify shapes, including drawings, manipulatives, and physical-world objects, in terms of their geometric attributes. That is, based on early work recognizing, naming, sorting, and building shapes from components, they describe in their own words why a shape belongs to a given category, such as squares, triangles, circles, rectangles, rhombuses, (regular) hexagons, and trapezoids (with bases of different lengths and nonparallel sides of the same length). In doing so, they differentiate between geometrically defining attributes (e.g., "hexagons have six straight sides”) and non-defining attributes (e.g., color, overall size, or orientation). 3. Day 1 & 2  Use lesson I’ve Seen That Shape Before from Illuminations. Provide time for students to do each Pre-Activity before moving to Activity, exploring physical models.I’ve Seen That Shape Before  These lessons are designed to span two 45-minute periods.  Each child should have their own set of solid figures from Go Math to use at this time.  Print the materials, Shape Cards Sheet, Name Cards Sheet, and Face Cards Sheet located in Illuminations lesson hyperlinked above.

4. Day 3  Students will continue their exploration of solid figures. This time you may decide if you would like to use foods/candies or use other real-life objects to sort and classify. 5. Enrich/Reteach/Intervention  Intervention-  Go Math, Language Support, p. 457B  Go Math, Tier 2, p. 457B  Enrich-students can investigate the real world by doing a scavenger hunt of the classroom or school campus.
