6 6 What is CIS101? Fulfills core requirement for computing course Has these components  Computer security  Learning community theme(Sustainability)  Application software (Excel)  HTML and Web Development  Introduction to Programming (JavaScript)

7 What is a learning community? Required to take at least one learning community Same students meet in two parallel classes, CIS101 and BUS150 Student teams will be the same for both classes Final team project will have BUS150 requirements and CIS101 requirements You will get separate grades for both classes 7

8 The goals of a learning community Link courses and disciplines so that students and their professors experience a coherent and enriched learning environment together Provide setting for college students to develop a sense of responsibility and community Encourage an increased interaction among students and faculty Provide a rich, learning-centered environment Emphasize active and collaborative learning Provide exploration and understanding of diverse perspectives and a deeper understanding of course materials 8

9 9 Sustainability “capacity to maintain a process indefinitely” (WikiPedia)(WikiPedia) Characteristic of eco-systems Resources are finite, and must be used in a renewable and sustainable manner We will use Excel to identify and define sustainability

10 10 Computer Security Computer security affects individuals and organizations Do you have spyware on your computer? How is your computer vulnerable? Do the organizations you work with protect your information?

11 11 Web assisted classes Hybrid class structure Combines in class meetings and online content 2 hours in computer classroom 1 credit delivered online (equivalent to one classroom hour)

12 12 What is online learning? Class interaction and learning delivered using technology Online site combines readings, quizzes, and discussion forums Pace uses Blackboard course management software to administer online courses

14 14 Finding your e-mail ID Find your e-mail ID in Pace Student E-Mail Directory (link to Directory from http://studentit.pace.edu/) http://studentit.pace.edu/ Enter your first name and last name Your e-mail ID and Alias will be displayed You will need e-mail ID to access your student e-mail and access Blackboard Your Alias is another account name others can use to e-mail you

16 16 Using STmail All e-mail sent to Pace services (doit, etc) must originate from your student account All Pace communications will be sent to your student account To forward student account e-mail to another account:  Go to http://pru.pace.edu and sign inhttp://pru.pace.edu  Select the mail forwarding option and enter the address you want to use

17 17 Sign on to Blackboard http://blackboard.pace.edu/ Username is Pace e-mail ID Password is the same as the portal
