* Each student must produce an individual investigation, which should address a purposeful research question and incorporate a scientific rationale * The student comes up with the research question and methodology – the teacher acts as a guide along the way
3
* A wide range of investigations is permitted: traditional hands on, open-ended, modelling and spreadsheet analysis, computer simulation analysis, online database analysis, or any combination of these types * The new IA is not an extended essay nor are students expected to do work in areas that go beyond the course level content. However, students may decide on a topic that is outside the syllabus, something of personal interest to them.
4
* Word length (approx. 1500-2000 words) ( be between 6-12 pages long) * Investigations needs to be able to be achievable. * Experimentation using school lab equipment/or from home. * Needs to be able to be conducted in a reasonable amount of time (avoid complex experimentation or longitudinal studies) * Needs to be relevant to the course. * Needs to be placed within a context.
5
* This activity requires you * to plan and carry out a single practical investigation * to collect primary data OR use secondary data in a biological context, * process and interpret the data collected, and * report on the conclusions drawn. * The investigation may be a fair test or a pattern-seeking investigation.

Personal Engagement MarkDescriptor 0 The student’s report does not reach a standard described by the descriptors below. 1 The evidence of personal engagement with the exploration is limited with little independent thinking, initiative or creativity. The justification given for choosing the research question and/or the topic under investigation does not demonstrate personal significance, interest or curiosity. There is little evidence of personal input and initiative in the designing, implementation or presentation of the investigation 2 The evidence of personal engagement with the exploration is clear with significant independent thinking, initiative or creativity. The justification given for choosing the research question and/or the topic under investigation demonstrates personal significance, interest or curiosity. There is evidence of personal input and initiative in the designing, implementation or presentation of the investigation.
7
* investigating life processes and the effects of environmental factors; * the use of microscopes and investigating cells and tissues; * culturing micro-organisms; * the use of models * quadrat sampling in a field study; * and investigating the impacts of natural events or human actions on an ecosystem.

TitleType of investigation Effect of halogen atom substitution on bond angles in halogenated compounds Computer modelling An investigation into the dependence of egg protein denaturation on temperature Hands-on practical Relationship between enthalpy of combustion and number of carbons in simple alcohols belonging to the same homologous series Secondary data from databases
9
* Need to use multiple databases that require information to be compiled for analysis.
10
* Look at syllabus in the subject guide. * Examine topics covered * Typed of experimentation * Come up with 3 possible investigations * (Due 1 week)
11
* You will be researching this research question and developing the Introduction and Background Information. * You are then going to be asked present this idea as a proposal.
