3 Planning and Preparation Recognize the opportunities for you and your development Learn about ALA, its divisions and overall structure Talk to colleagues, mentors, leaders to gain their perspectives and suggestions Ask them to introduce you to others – build your network

4 Five Leadership Practices Challenge the process Inspire shared vision Enable others to act Model the way Encourage the heart

5 Challenging the Process Question the status quo Suggest new approaches Think and encourage others to think in new and different ways Focus on innovation

6 Inspire Shared Vision Become a futurist Clarify your own vision of what is possible Encourage others to clarify and communicate their visions Engage others in determining how to make the vision happen Speak positively and from the heart

7 Enable Others to Act Build relationships based upon trust Involve others in meaningful activities Expect positive and effective results Value each person and his or her contributions

8 Model the Way Act in accordance with your principles and values Be mindful of your actions and how they affect others Lead by example

9 Encourage the Heart Recognize and express appreciation for what others do Use tangible tokens to convey appreciation Be a cheerleader, in your own style Focus on how each person contributes her or his personal best and acknowledge it

10 Working on a Project Team This is an opportunity for you to: collaborate with others bring your strengths and capabilities develop a plan for a meaningful project within ALA learn more about a part of ALA work in a virtual team get to know an ALA staff member (project contact person) and a member leader (project mentor)

12 Preparing the Project Plan Review the project description given to you Identify key components Specify the project goals Identify the customers of the project Determine the deliverables Decide on the specific activities Develop the timetable

13 Getting Organized Take some time to get to know each other – describe what each of you bring to this project. Discuss the project description. Identify any questions or areas for clarification. Start to complete the Preparing a Project Plan worksheet. Focus on the first 4 items. Develop an initial work plan.
