Exponents MUST BE THE SAME before you can add/subtract 2 numbers written in scientific notation. Example 1: 7.35 x 10 2 m + 2.43 x 10 2 m = ? › Are exponents the same? › If yes, just add the 7.35 + 2.43, and make the answer x 10 ?. Example 2: 2.70 x 10 7 + 15.6 x 10 6 + 0.165 x 10 8 = ? › Are exponents the same? › Make them the same, then add. (See p.32)

Practice Problems (p.32): 14 (a and h ONLY)
4
Multiplying: › Multiply the first 2 numbers › Add the exponents › Example: (2 x 10 3 ) x (3 x 10 2 ) = 6 x 10 5 Dividing: › Divide the first 2 numbers › Subtract the exponent of the divisor from the exponent of the dividend. › Example: (9 x 10 8 ) ÷ (3 x 10 -4 ) = 3 x 10 12
