THE CALL TO WORSHIP [ Pastor / CONGREGATION ] Since we have been justified [that is, made right with God] by faith, WE HAVE PEACE WITH GOD THROUGH OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST, Through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. AND WE REJOICE IN THE HOPE OF THE GLORY OF GOD.

Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings BECAUSE WE KNOW THAT SUFFERING PRODUCES PERSEVERANCE; Perseverance produces character; AND CHARACTER PRODUCES HOPE; And hope does not disappoint us BECAUSE GOD HAS POURED OUT HIS LOVE INTO OUR HEARTS BY THE HOLY SPIRIT WHOM HE HAS GIVEN TO US.

THE OPENING HYMN #151 A MIGHTY FORTRESS IS OUR GOD Words and Music: Martin Luther 1579

(1) A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing; Our helper He, amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing: For still our ancient foe doth seek to work us woe; His craft and pow’r are great, and, armed with cruel hate, On earth is not his equal.

(2) Did we in our own strength confide, Our striving would be losing, Were not the right Man on our side, The Man of God’s own choosing: Dost ask who that may be? Christ Jesus, it is He; Lord Sabaoth, His Name, From age to age the same, And He must win the battle.

(3) And though this world, with devils filled, Should threaten to undo us, We will not fear, for God hath willed His truth to triumph through us; The Prince of Darkness grim, We tremble not for him; His rage we can endure, for lo, his doom is sure, One little word shall fell him.

(4) That word above all earthly pow’rs, No thanks to them, abideth; The Spirit and the gifts are ours Through Him Who with us sideth; Let goods and kindred go, This mortal life also; The body they may kill: God’s truth abideth still, His kingdom is forever.

SILENT PRAYERS OF THANKSGIVING AND CONFESSION THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON Romans 1:17; Ephesians 2:8-9 In the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed, a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, as it is written: “The righteous, the just, will live by faith. For you are saved by grace through faith, and this is not from yourselves; it is the gift of God so that no one can boast.”

‘ALLELUIA’ Alleluia (8x) He’s My Savior (8x) He is worthy (8x) I will praise Him (8x) I will thank Him (8x) I will love him (8x) Alleluia (8x)

AFFIRMING OUR FAITH The Heidelberg Catechism Question #1 WHAT IS YOUR ONLY COMFORT, IN LIFE AND IN DEATH? Answer #1

That I belong, body and soul, in life and in death, not to myself, but to my faithful Savior, Jesus Christ; Who at the cost of His own blood has fully paid for all my sins, and has completely freed me from the dominion of the devil;

That He protects me so well that, without the will of my Father in heaven, not a hair can fall from my head; indeed, that everything must fit His purpose for my salvation. Therefore, by His Holy Spirit, He also assures me of eternal life, and makes me wholeheartedly willing and ready from now on, to live for Him.

A TIME OF SHARING WITH GOD’S CHILDREN OF ALL AGES

THE HEBREW SCRIPTURE: Habakkuk 2:1-4 Read by Elder Neil VanDerJagt, CPA I will stand at my watch and station myself on the ramparts; I will look to see what the Lord will say to me, and what answer I am to give. Then the Lord replied: “Write down the revelation and make it plain on tablets so that a herald may run with it. For the revelation awaits an appointed time; It speaks of the end and will not prove false.

Even though the revelation lingers, wait for it; It will certainly come and will not delay in accordance with the Lord’s time. “See, the enemy of God is puffed up; The enemy’s desires are not upright—but the just, the person who is right with God, WILL LIVE BY FAITH. THE FIRST NEW TESTAMENT SCRIPTURE Romans 3:19-28 Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world held accountable to God.

Therefore no one will be declared righteous in God’s sight by the works of the law; Rather, through the law we become conscious of our sin. But now apart from the law the righteousness of God has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference between Jew and Gentile, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.

God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, through the shedding of his blood— to be received by faith. He did this to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished—He did it to demonstrate his righteousness at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus. Where, then, is boasting? It is excluded. Because of what law? The law that requires works? No, because of the law that requires faith. For we maintain that a person is JUSTIFIED BY FAITH apart from the works of the law.

THE SECOND NEW TESTAMENT SCRIPTURE John 8:31-36 To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” They answered him, “We are Abraham’s descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?” Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.

#575 ‘LEANING ON THE EVERLASTING ARMS’ [ All who are able please stand ]

What a fellowship,(1) what a joy divine, Leaning on the everlasting arms; What a blessedness, what a peace is mine, Leaning on the everlasting arms. Leaning, leaning, safe and secure from all alarms; Leaning, leaning, leaning on the everlasting arms.

Oh, how sweet to walk(2) in this pilgrim way, Leaning on the everlasting arms; Oh, how bright the path grows from day to day, Leaning on the everlasting arms. Leaning, leaning, safe and secure from all alarms; Leaning, leaning, leaning on the everlasting arms.

What have I to dread, (3) what have I to fear, Leaning on the everlasting arms? I have blessed peace with my Lord so near, Leaning on the everlasting arms. Leaning, leaning, safe and secure from all alarms; Leaning, leaning, leaning on the everlasting arms.

ROMANS 3:21-23 THE CENTRAL FOCUS OF THE REFORMATION “But now the righteousness of God has been made known apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it—the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ is for all who believe. For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified (made right with God) by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God sent to us.”
