SEAMLESS: Demo Version 1.4 “Presenting current developments and welcoming your feedback” For contact: seamless.office@wur.nlseamless.office@wur.nl
2
Rapid introduction to SEAMLESS-IF Main steps in SEAMLESS IF Schematic structure of SEAMLESS-IF Some applications of SEAMLESS-IF
3
The Problem Specification is the basis for constructing the Scenarios and selecting Indicators. Next, the modelling framework is applied. Main steps in SEAMLESS-IF
4
Schematic structure of modelling framework applied within SEAMLESS-IF
5
Some applications of SEAMLESS-IF In general: to assess the strengths and weaknesses of new policies and technical innovations prior to their introduction Example 1: what are the likely consequences of CAP reforms on agricultural systems, rural employment, landscape and environment in the EU as a whole or the new member states ? Example 2: what alternative policies can be developed to enhance the role of agriculture in increasing carbon sequestration and reducing greenhouse gas emissions ? Example 3: Does multi-functionality in agriculture stimulate sustainable development of rural areas and which policies can support this ?
6
Examples of SEAMLESS-IF applications Landscape as a result of European agriculture Regional products from European agriculture Integrated European research work to translate policy questions into scenarios and to perform ex-ante integrated assessments of alternative new policies
7
SEAMLESS-IF - call interpretation We propose an integrated framework offering a generic, flexible, modular and operational structure that enables: 1.analysis at the full range of scales 2.analysis of the environmental, economic and social contributions of a multifunctional agriculture 3.analysis of a broad range of issues Ex-ante assessment of agricultural, environmental and rural development policies
8
Role of Prototypes Mitigating risk Ambitions and risk: integration across disciplines and scales Working with components with stand-alone value Prototype of SEAMLESS-IF: a number of working components User involvement and interaction (User Forum) Show concepts, methods and working versions of SEAMLESS-IF Preliminary applications SEAMLESS beyond 2008
9
Role of Prototypes Intermediate deliverables to EC Assessment of project – new advance payments New calls Important for the process within the project Core team on Prototype 1: does the integration work? Show how specific components or elements fit in the larger frame Preliminary testing and improving Redefine user requirements and improving design and implementation
10
Prototype 1 (summer 2006) Space: EU 25 with farm and regional typologies Time horizon: 2012 - time steps:1 year Sectors: arable farming Methodology and technical integration rather than results!
11
Prototype 1 and Demo Version Prototype 1 GUI suggesting full functionality Working functionality in Prototype 1 Demo Version A “T”-shaped relation between the Demo Version and Prototype I: the Demo Version represents the Graphical User Interface (GUI) of SEAMLESS-IF.
12
This Demo Version v1.4 The following slides will guide the viewer through the major screen shots of the Demo Version of SEAMLESS-IF. The Demo Version is not fully working, but offers a blue-print on the specification, interaction and integration of indicators, quantitative models and tools, knowledge base and software architecture (SeamFrame).
13
The first screen of loading the Demo Version 1.4
14
Creating a new project file
15
Content of the Menu Bar: Project, Definition, Implementation
16
Opening the existing project file: ‘sample_project_tes tcase1.xml’
17
An ‘Overview’ screen assessable from other Project screens.
18
The ‘Info’ button provides a short Project description Green => implementation is operational
19
A ‘Workplan’ button activates the screen with Schedule and Diagram of the Project workplan
20
Rich Graphical options enabling the flexibility in representation of Activities and their Relations
21
Work with Project settings is enabled from the Manu Bar and an ‘Overview’ option
22
‘Problem’ activates 4 sub-screens to be filled in by a Project Manager: Policy Conext, Policy Options, Policy Impacts and Model Used
23
Policy options screen is linked to Impacts of Interest and Scenarios
24
Policy impacts screen is linked to Indicators
25
Project description is done in close collaboration with stakeholder. List of stakeholders can be generated and shared with other Projects.
26
Impacts of Interest screen is linked to Scenarios
28
System elements (at each Aspect and Scale) can be entered to describe the system under investigation in the current Project.
29
scheme System description in a form of Diagram Graphical possibilities to draw elements and links of various types between those
30
The Problem Specification is followed by Constructing the Scenarios and selecting Indicators
31
Scenarios of various types (Policy, Baseline) can be added Details about each Scenario
32
Descriptive information about Scenario Frameworks which can be selected from available list
34
Indicators are entered, edited and saved Descriptive information about Indicator Frameworks which can be selected from available list For selection from shared indicators, see next slide Yellow => Beta- implementation
35
Pre-selection can be done by choosing the Framework, Aspect and/or Scale Selection by ticking a box
37
List Management dialog allows modifying the list of Aspects and Scales Indicator Settings => The screen of entering the New Indicators. Allows specifying the Indicator Framework, Aspect, Level, Threshold, Target
38
This option allows configuring each Indicator to a Model Chain by activating the Bind button This part represents the selected Indicators
40
DEMO => Option to view the Demo Model Chain
41
Model Outputs Model Inputs Linking model inputs and outputs in a Graphical way Here graphics is enabled similar to the Workplan and System Elements
42
Adding model components from the list
43
Adding New Model Chain
44
Opening a Model Chain from the file
45
Setting experiments, i.e. assigning input data of the exogenous elements. This is done by setting the Values in the lower part of the dialog The Edit button calls for Scenario Editor Red=>Alpha- implementation of the functionality
46
Missing slide with the CAPRI model editor (not working) – activated by button “Edit” from the previous screen One of the Exogenous variables of Scenario in Prototype 1
47
Calculations screen allows viewing the status of calculations by activating the Start button
49
Blue => Visualizations are not operational Various modes of results: Maps, Bars, etc.
50
Calls for the CAPRI maps, see next slide
51
View adjusts for various products, indicators, scenarios, countries, scale
53
Possibility to zoom Information changes upon moving the cursor along the regions (here: Midi-Pyrenees)
54
Illustration of the tool for Post-Model Analysis: PICA. Lowe part of the screen changes by clicking the boxes in the upper part Blue => implementation is not operational The Procedure for Institutional Compatibility Assessment (PICA) is based on the idea of compatibility. The compatibility between policy options and institutions is one determinant to assess the effectiveness of policy making.
55
Description of step 1 is presented in the lower part of the dialog
58
This version will be further elaborated and delivered as Prototype 1 of SEAMLESS-IF For questions and comments contact: seamless.office@wur.nl seamless.office@wur.nl
