Behavior in of boys and girls --influenced by: Sexism: discrimination based on belief that one ’ s sex is superior Sex role socialization: conveys expectations about way boys and girls should “ behave ” Sex role stereotyping: belief that certain behaviors are “ feminine ” and others “ masculine ”

Diversity Embedded in American Way of Life! Legal immigration accounts for up to 50% of annual population growth in US Definitions of culture include: 1.Way of life 2.Beliefs, attitudes, habits, values, & practices 3.Program for survival and adaptation to environment

“Salad bowl” v. “Melting Pot” Ethnic Group: Individuals within larger culture who share self-defined racial or cultural identity (values, behaviorial styles, etc.) Cultural Identity: Overall sense of who one is (age, racial identity, language, occupations, income level, etc.- -those things important to individual identity) Multiculturalism:Ability to see the world from different cultural frames of reference Multiculturalism: Ability to see the world from different cultural frames of reference Ethnicity: Term used to impart a sense of peoplehood Race: distinguished on biological traits & characteristics

Diversity among Students: Diversity increasing while % of minority teachers decreasing Lower achievement among African American, Latino & Hispanic, and American Indian Higher achievement among Anglo European American and Asian counterpart Reflects strong connection between socioeconomic status (SES) & achievement
