3. 3 Grand Challenges Why is one 8-figure grant award better than 10 7-figure awards? Grand Challenges: Problems whose scope spans institutional and disciplinary boundaries and whose solutions require new knowledge, new tools, and new treatments. At IU and IUB we are harnessing strengths in every field to identify and address big questions whose answers lie beyond the frontiers of current knowledge. A key priority in the IU Bicentennial Strategic Plan. Most significant investment in IU’s research infrastructure in the university’s history. Will fund up to five Grand Challenge initiatives and support hiring up to175 new faculty and hundreds of new graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. Led by VP for Research.

4. 4 Criteria for challenges and RT role Project key criteria: – Is it a Grand Challenge? – Value to State of Indiana – Time commitment – Deanly commitment Leader key criteria: – Tenure-track faculty member – History of success PTI role – For all affiliated centers other than D2I and DSC, the role of PTI and RT is to provide best possible support for all Grand Challenge efforts with equal enthusiasm, given a match between our resources and strengths and project needs. – CRT recommendations will help here. 7. 7 Email template for contacting Grand Challenge leaders Dear ###___, I understand you are leading a Grand Challenge project. The Research Technologies Division of UITS and Pervasive Technology Institute are offering to assist each Grand Challenge project group in whatever ways we can. We provide an array of IT services and resources that may be relevant to your project. In general, we do not expect to be written into budgets unless a project requires considerable dedicated programmer effort. I would be happy talk with you about ways that research information technology could support your project. We would begin by discussing your project. From this discussion we would get a sense of the research services and resources that could benefit you the most. Please let us know how we can be of service to you.

8. 8 Emerging Areas of Research Not everything is a Grand Challenge. Emerging areas of research are key areas of current or growing research strength on the IU Bloomington campus in which we can become a national and/or international leader. Beginning in 2016, the Bloomington campus will identify up to six promising areas of research in which IUB faculty are equipped to conduct most, if not all, aspects of the research. IUB is the only campus currently involved in emerging areas of research.

9. 9 What the goals are and are not Grand Challenges are a means of transforming IU research. They are NOT sources of internal funding in lieu of competing for federal funding (and lessons learned from Lilly grants). They involve major initiatives that combine intellectual talents, approach big problems, and reap major, practical results. RT and funding and Grand Challenges – In general we do not need to be written into Grand Challenges budgets unless full-time, dedicated programmers are needed. – Contact Stewart before requesting budget money.
