The S.L.A.M. Problem - Simultaneous Localization and Map Building The ability to place an autonomous vehicle in an unknown location and environment, and to have it build an accurate map using only its observations and then to have it navigate simultaneously in such an environment while constantly updating this map. This would eliminate the need of an artificial infrastructure, or some a priori knowledge of its environment. Considered by many to be the “Holy Grail” of the autonomous vehicle research community.

Applications of this technology would be beneficial where precise map information and position is unknown. Some examples include: Autonomous Planetary Exploration Sub sea autonomous vehicles to include unmanned vehicles for deep sea exploration Autonomous air-borne vehicles Autonomous space exploration of our solar system and beyond Autonomous all terrain vehicles involved with tasks such as mining or construction Environments with constantly changing landscapes particularly involving snow and ice accumulation
