ME 2110: Creative Decisions and Design Prof J.Rhett Mayor 3 What are UUV’s? Unmanned Undersea Vehicles (UUV) –Remote controlled –Autonomous –Artificial Intelligence Primary use in mine countermeasures, battle space awareness and reconnaissance missions Represent State-of-the-Art in mechatronic systems http://www.cornwallmodelboats.co.uk/acatalo g/graupner_mini_uboat.html Boeing BLQ-11 sub-recoverable UUV [www.boeing.com] Remus 6000 [www.hydroidincnc.com]

5
ME 2110: Creative Decisions and Design Prof J.Rhett Mayor 5 Mission Objectives There are four (4) mission objectives for this mission: –1. Disable enemy surface vessel –2. Deploy surveillance buoy –3. Recover and Redeploy drifting buoy –4. Return and dock with carrier submarine UUV must complete its mission without detection Safety of the surface vessel escort should be enhanced

ME 2110: Creative Decisions and Design Prof J.Rhett Mayor 6 UUV Proving Grounds Starting Area Rotating Patrol Boat (one of two) Green Zone Littoral Battle Space
7
ME 2110: Creative Decisions and Design Prof J.Rhett Mayor 7 Detection will result in depth charge attack on UUV from Patrol Boats – the Track fights back!
8
ME 2110: Creative Decisions and Design Prof J.Rhett Mayor 8 Battle Space Definition Target Deployment Zone Surface Escort Enemy Frigate Docking Zone Drift Zone Mine Location (one of four)
9
ME 2110: Creative Decisions and Design Prof J.Rhett Mayor 9 Task Scoring Task 1 – Disable surface vessel –10 points, -5pts if destroyed Task 2 – Deploy surveillance buoy –20 points for successful deployment –15 points if buoy is damaged Task 3 – Recover and Redeploy Drifting Buoy –40 points – successfully deployed –35 points – Damaged buoy Task 4 – Return and Dock with Submarine –10 points for successful docking –-10pts if UUV still outside docking zone at completion
10
ME 2110: Creative Decisions and Design Prof J.Rhett Mayor 10 Penalties Detection by Patrol Boats –Depth charge attacks –Penalty assessed as cumulative total of all dice in zone Detection by Sea Mines –5pt penalty per mine Damage to surface escort –Damage assessed by number of bowling pins knocked over at end of competition –Penalty assessed as -5pts per pin
11
ME 2110: Creative Decisions and Design Prof J.Rhett Mayor 11 Individual Round Each student operates UUV Manual start – one action trigger Gravity and 3 mouse-traps only UUV must accomplish: –Task 1 – Disable enemy surface vessel –Task 2 – Deploy surveillance buoy
12
ME 2110: Creative Decisions and Design Prof J.Rhett Mayor 12 Preliminary Round First Team event Computer controlled with automatic start UUV must accomplish –Task 1 – Disable Frigate –Task 2 – Deploy buoy –Task 4 – Return and Dock
13
ME 2110: Creative Decisions and Design Prof J.Rhett Mayor 13 Qualifying Round Your team’s machine will compete against other machines in all aspects of the design challenge. You will compete several times during the studio period against a variety of opponents. Your score will be ranked only against teams in your studio section. The results from this qualifying round will be used to seed the brackets for the final tournament.
14
ME 2110: Creative Decisions and Design Prof J.Rhett Mayor 14 Final Competition Your machine will compete in two events: the design review and the UUV Littoral Op’s a) Design Review: –Starting at 5:00pm a panel of judges will perform a design review of your machine. You will need to describe your machine quickly and clearly to the judges that visit your machine. The judges will score your machine on aesthetics, ingenuity, and presentation. b) UUV Littoral Ops: –Your machine will compete against other machines to achieve the best score. The top two scoring machines in each contest will be declared winners. –The contest will be a double elimination tournament until only 4 teams remain. When 4 teams remain, there will be 1 final match to determine the winner
