(Mobile apps will continue to grow) existing corporate applications to become mobile enabled and impact the wireless service:- Blackboard, QV, etc. increasing bandwidth demand. New and emerging mobile applications:- WiFi Telephony. Video over WiFi. Wireless storage.

www.tils.qut.edu.au Staff and Students are choosing to be mobile:- ~40,000 unique users for 2011 (~90% of QUT clients). ~25,000 unique users per month during semester. ~10,000 unique users per day during semester. Peek of ~5,000 concurrent users on most days. Issues Demand Management Emergence of new applications:- Telephony over WiFi. Wireless only office. Wireless storage. www.tils.qut.edu.au Mobility Services: Internet Access Internet Access is now seamless for mobile devices:- Automatic activation of Internet Access. No inhibitor for mobile users. Easy access to Internet Applications. Issues Quotas can be restrictive for some.

www.tils.qut.edu.au Mobility Services: Off Campus Access Eduroam has been a big success and use continues to grow. Dial in service to be decommissioned end 2011 due to extremely low use. VPN provides on campus experience wile off campus. Allows access to corporate applications which are not available off campus.

www.tils.qut.edu.au Mobility Services: Off Campus Access Enabler for working from off site (Home, Travelling, Visiting another Institution, Gaol) Automatic activation of Internet Access. No inhibitor to mobile use or mobile applications. Manage data and telephony costs when traveling overseas. Issues Not all mobility devices support VPN. Many cases requires licencing (Cost). Awareness of issues when travelling internationally.

www.tils.qut.edu.au Mobility Services: Devices Growth in mobile devices? Users carrying more than one device:- June 2011 QUT had ~24,000 unique individuals use the wireless service. June 2011 QUT had ~29,000 unique devices connected to wireless ( Note: 63% were registered as Apple devices ).

www.tils.qut.edu.au BYO increasingly popular. This is both good and bad. Data classification and securitisation. There needs to be a lot of work done in this area. Demand Management. Need for mobile device management:- –Secure –Monitor –Manage –Remote Control Mobility Services: Device Issues

www.tils.qut.edu.au Corporate Applications for mobile devices will grow. IM, email, telephony well supported. Issues Difficult transition from TDM to IPTelephony. Some collaboration applications not well supported. Mobility Services: Collaboration Services

www.tils.qut.edu.au Universities are conservative organizations which tend to be slow to move while mobility is evolving at the speed of electrons. Mobility allows for the blending of work and life. Is this a good thing? How can this be managed / rewarded? New policies needed around work from home and the establishment of the home office. Mobility Services: Soft Issues
