2
Aerospace Engineering Aerospace engineering advances the technology and designs of aircraft and space vehicles. Aerospace engineers can specialise in the design and development of a number of vehicles, including rockets, missiles, space stations and airplanes.
3
Required Training You need at least a bachelors degree in engineering to become a aerospace engineer. High school students interested in studying aerospace engineering should take courses in chemistry, physics, and math, including algebra, trigonometry, and calculus.
4
Skills and Characteristics Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems. Understanding written sentences and paragraphs in work related documents. Analyzing needs and product requirements to create a design.
5
Typical Wages The median annual wage for aerospace engineers was $103,720 in May 2012. The median wage is the wage at which half of the workers in an occupation earned more than that amount and half earned less. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $65,450, and the top 10 percent earned more than $149,120.
6
Job Outlook Employment of aerospace engineers is projected to grow 7 percent from 2012 to 2022, slower than the average for all occupations. In addition, aircraft are being redesigned to cut down on noise pollution and to raise fuel efficiency, which will help spur demand for research and development.
