I. Growing up His parents were poor farmers Orphaned at 15 Joined the military as a teenager.

Rise to Fame Worked his way up in the military. Won battles of Horseshoe Bend and New Orleans. Nicknamed “Old Hickory”

Suffrage Jackson was the champion of the common man. He helped expand suffrage to include all white men.

Government Jobs Jackson Fired many Federal employees and replaced them with his supporters. This created the “Spoils System”

Crisis over Tariffs South unhappy, threatens to secede. Jackson takes a strong stand for Unity over states’ rights. Passes Force Bill-military can enforce acts of congress.

Native American Relations “The Five civilized tribes”, Cherokee, Creek, Seminole, Chickasaw, Choctaw had successful farms in the South. Americans wanted their land. Jackson and congress pass the “Indian Removal Act”.

Trail of Tears Cherokee Refuse to move. Take case to Supreme Court. Jackson ignores Supreme Court ruling and sends military to force the Cherokee to move. They have to walk and carry everything to the “Indian Territory”.
