Reader and Principal Lecturer Promotion Arrangements for Application in 2013/14 HR & OD

Why the changes to process? 2009 staff survey – only 23% of respondents felt our promotion processes were fit for purpose. “guidance on Readership and Professorship applications is sketchy at best” “meaningful criteria for Readerships and Professorships would be helpful”

Changes made in 2010/11 established new aims for PL/Reader promotions: Support the strategic aims and objectives of the university, particularly in relation to quality teaching and learning, research and knowledge exchange and academic leadership Ensure that the University provides an effective means to motivate, identify and support talented staff able to make the best contribution to our ongoing success Provide a transparent and open process and criteria, readily understood by all Alignment of appointment process for Reader and PL Recognition of a substantive contribution, with clear expectations of successful applicants

Constructing the new PL1 (L&T) pathway Parity of standards Criteria for progression from Senior Lecturer to Principal Lecturer which are as transparent as possible and incorporate a holistic approach to L&T development which includes: contributions to educational developments; academic leadership; scholarship of learning and teaching and excellence in L&T. Alignment of promotion criteria with the HEA/UK Professional Standards framework Providing a progression / development route that informs career planning within recruitment, appraisal, staff development and succession planning

Revised process from 2010/11 Stage 1 Applicant to liaise with HOD/Director Initial application – CV, written statement, put forward referees Panel review Stage 2 Attend interview External referees chosen by the University FEEDBACK

Academic Leadership PL roles sit within the ‘management spectrum’ under the National Pay Framework i.e they are re- numerated at a level that is mean to reflect leadership and management responsibility When applying, what has been your leadership/management experience? Holistic decision “The panel will assess applications holistically, using the criteria to inform their overall judgements. Applicants would not be expected to meet all criteria but to indicate where and how they have done so and how these have contributed to their overall application to the PL grade.” Reader & Principal Lecturer Regs 2011
