2. BOSTON PUBLIC SCHOOLS For the first time since 2003, 4 th graders in BPS performed on par with students across all other school districts throughout the nation in reading. BPS has successfully closed the 14 point gap between the district and the national average in 8 th grade mathematics that existed in 2003, sustaining performance on par with the nation since 2009. 2 BPS’ achievement in both reading and math are now on par with the national average, as measured by NAEP - also known as the “nation’s report card”.

5. BOSTON PUBLIC SCHOOLS Boston Public Schools was one of only 4 urban districts* to demonstrate significant gains in 4 th grade reading between 2013 and 2015. For the first time since 2003, the performance of 4 th graders in BPS is comparable to the national average in reading. In 4 th and 8 th grade reading, BPS exceeded or performed on par with 16 of the other 20 urban districts participating in NAEP TUDA in 2015. African-American, Latino, students with disabilities, and English Language Learners in BPS outperformed both the national average and that across large cities in the U.S. in 4 th reading. BPS achieved significant gains with 4 th graders in the lower percentile bands (10 th and 25 th ) between 2013 and 2015. 5 2015 4 TH AND 8 TH GRADE READING RESULTS * Note: In 2015, Boston was one of 21 urban school districts to participate in the Trial Urban District Assessment (TUDA). In 2003, Boston was one of only ten districts that volunteered by participate in TUDA, which now includes these cities: Albuquerque, Atlanta, Austin, Baltimore City, Boston, Charlotte, Chicago, Cleveland, Dallas, Detroit, Duval County (FL), Washington D.C., Fresno, Hillsborough County (FL), Houston, Jefferson County (KY), Los Angeles, Miami-Dada, New York, Philadelphia, and San Diego.

27. BOSTON PUBLIC SCHOOLS Since 2009, 8 th graders in Boston have sustained strong performance on par with the national average. In 2015, though, Boston successfully closed the gap between the district and the national average, being the only urban district to have done so. Boston has made some of the greatest long term gains in both 4 th and 8 th grade mathematics of any urban district since 2003. African-American students in both 4 th and 8 th grade in BPS are outperforming the national average and that of large cities in mathematics. Students with disabilities are outperforming the large cities average in 8 th grade math. English Language Learners are outperforming the national average in 4 th grade math.
