Biology October 27 and 28

NEW SEATING CHART!!!! Paradigm (noun) A theory or a group of ideas about how something should be done, made, or thought about. “Professor Reed’s surprising new findings challenged the old paradigm.” By the time the bell rings – In your seat – Homework out – Notebook open – Mind open

Welcome! Algorithm (noun) A set of steps that are followed in order to solve a mathematical problem or to complete a computer process. “T’Mya’s innovative algorithm predicted the date the hole in the ozone would close.” By the time the bell rings – In your seat – Homework out – Notebook open – Mind open

Think-Pair-Share What interactions exist between members of the same community?

What are three major types of interactions among organisms? There are three major types of interactions among organisms: 1.Competition 2.Predation 3.Symbiosis Turn to your elbow partner and explain an example of competition

Competition Competition is the struggle between organisms to survive as they attempt to use the same limited resource. In any ecosystem, there is a limited amount of food, water and shelter. What is competition? What do organisms have to do in order to reduce competition?

Predation Predation is an interaction in which one organism kills another for food. The organism that does the killing for food is the predator. The organisms that is killed for food is the prey. What is predation? What is the relationship between predator and prey?

Checkpoint Using the food web below, predict what would happen if the mouse went extinct. Explain your reasoning

Symbiosis Any relationship in which two species live closely together

Three types of symbiosis Mutualism – both species benefit Commensalism – one species benefits, the other species is not affected Parasitism – one species benefits, the other species is harmed What type of symbiosis was happening between the bee and the flower on the previous page??

Three types of symbiosis Mutualism- both species benefit

Mutualism: Zebra and zebra finch

Three types of symbiosis Commensalism- one species benefits, the other is not affected

Commensalism: whale and barnacles

Three types of symbiosis Parasitism- one species benefits while the other is harmed

Parasitism: human and mosquito

What relationship is…..?

What relationship is ….?

Exit Ticket Compare and contrast predation and parasitism
