Es gibt ……..(there is)

The expression es gibt (there is) is always followed by an OBJECT!! (accusative)

What does that mean??????

Well, let s have a look at what happens to the word a in the following two sentences.

Dasistein Markt Subj.VerbSubj. VerbObj. Esgibt ein en Markt (That is a market) (There is a market)

Have you noticed…..? ein Markt in sentence 1 changes toein Markt in sentence 1 changes to ein en Markt in sentence 2.ein en Markt in sentence 2. THIS IS BECAUSE einen Markt IS THE OBJECT (Accusativ) OF THE SENTENCE!!!! THIS IS BECAUSE einen Markt IS THE OBJECT (Accusativ) OF THE SENTENCE!!!!

The good news…….. This change only happens to masculine (blue) nouns

Subj.VerbObj. Esgibt ein en Markt eine Post ein Kino -- Geschäfte

But what if… I wanted to say that there isnt a market or a cinema ? No problem – have a look at this:

Subj.VerbObj. Esgibt k ein en Markt k eine Post k ein Kino k eine Geschäfte (There is no….)

All you need to do is stick a k in front of the einen, eine, ein. Have you noticed what happened to the plural object? Well look at this again: Es gibt -----Geschäfte (there are shops) Es gibt k eine Geschäfte (there are no shops)

Remember….. After the expression es gibt you always need an OBJECT. If the OBJECT is masculine ein becomes (k)ein en !
