OVERALL STRUCTURE OF THE FIVE-PARAGRAPH ESSAY Introduction: Give them background. Thesis: Map the the direction. Body: Show them. Conclusion: Summarize your conclusions.

P1: Introduction Provides background information that defines your purpose. What is the relevance of this topic? Is it timely and worth a discussion? Acknowledges your audience. Are there key terms and phrases that need to defined? Sets your tone. P1

Introduction and the Thesis Statement The thesis statement is the roadmap for your readers. Show them where you are going. Last sentence in your introduction In one statement explain: Main Idea Attitude Points Success in Kumon depends on dedication, consistency, hard work. Thesis ↓ ↓ ↓

P2-P4 The Body Paragraphs Begins with a topic sentence. Road map to your paragraph. Each topic sentence reflects a point in your thesis statement. Supports the main idea Contains a minimum of three strong supporting examples. E.g.. Definitions, quotes, examples, commentary, personal experience Minimum of 8-10 complex and compound sentence. Maintains a consistent point of view. Maintains a consistent voice. P2 P3 P4

P5: The Conclusion Summarizes your thesis statement Restates a support fact or example from the body. Provides a summary of your research. Discusses a solution, if a problem was posed. P5
