3 13/12/2015 ALTc Conference 2012slide 3 Defining Digital Literacies JISC’s Definition of Digital Literacy: Digital Literacy defines those capabilities which fit an individual for living, learning and working in a digital society (Beetham 2010) Defining a particular set of capabilities as a 'literacy' means claiming that: they are a pre-requisite or foundation for other capabilities; they are critical to an individual's life chances; they are essential to the making and sharing of culturally significant meanings; As a result, there is or should be a society-wide entitglement to those capabilities at some level

Changes to Scholarly Practice Changes to student technology use and study habits Needing students to take more responsibility for their own digital devices/Skills Preparing students to live in a global inter-connected society Capturing new markets – delivering learning away from campus settings

Learning &Teaching Practices (technology use varies by subject, department, institution, VLEs continue to be widely used, video and audio to give feedback).

Forward Thinking Institutions are: supporting and rewarding staff innovating use of digital technologies. recognising a diverse range of technologies are being used including non-institutional tools and services - seen as a resource not a threat. Making explicit to students what kinds of digital practice is expected in the context of their study and what kinds of digital practice are not tolerated
