1. Before we get to our warm-up, take out one piece of paper and one pen or pencil and get ready for a reading quiz!!!

2. Give one or two sentences describing what Jack and Ralph disagree about in Chapter Three.

3. While Jack is hunting pigs, Ralph is working on building huts. Who is the only person who is helping Ralph with building the huts?

4. Warm-up: Thus far in our novel, three different types of leaders have emerged in the book– Ralph, Jack and Piggy. The three are very distinct ways of persuading the other boys on the island. 1. State whether each of the three leaders rules by ethos, pathos, or logos. 2. Then, give textual evidence to support how we know that at least ONE of these boys rules by either ethos, pathos, or logos. Explain what this evidence shows.

5.  Work on your second journal for symbolism and point of view for chapter three.  Ideas on what you think might be symbols (not what they represent, but what might be symbols?)

6. Reading 3.7 Recognize and understand the significance of various literary devices, including figurative language, imagery, allegory, and symbolism, and explain their appeal. Reading 3.9 Explain how voice, persona, and the choice of a narrator affect characterization and the tone, plot, and credibility of a text.

7. LORD OF THE FLIES  Let’s start reading Chapter Four– “Painted Faces and Long Hair.”  Question: What do we think of when we hear of “painted faces and long hair”? What might this chapter title mean?
