2 The United States is made up of 50 States, that each have their own separate government. A state can be defined by the territory, or one of the territories, of a government. Each state has their own capital, that is the headquarters of their state government. Click the States to continue your learning

3 There were 13 original colonies, and when the United States broke away from Britain those colonies became the first States of America. With the expansion westward the United States grew to 38 states in just 100 years of being an independent country. Since the beginning of the 20 th century the United States has added 5 states, with the most recent being Alaska in 1959.

14 Florida is located in the southeast area of the United States, in between the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean. It is known at the panhandle state due to its shape. Click Arrow for next Question

18 Jackson became the capital of Mississippi in 1821 after President Andrew Jackson. Currently there is a population of 130,694 in 2008.

20 Alaska covers 663,267 square miles, which is more than double the square mileage than the next state Texas, 268,580 square miles. Rhode Island is the smallest state in size with 1,545 square miles

22 California’s population in July of 2009 was 36,961,664 The second largest population by state is Texas with 24,782,302 people The lowest state population is Wyoming with 544,270 people

24 Guam is not one of the official 50 States of the U.S.A. It is however a part of the United States territory. Guam even has seats in Congress, but does not vote in Presidential elections.

26 Kansas City is the largest city in Missouri

28 The Appalachian Mountains are the mountain range east of the Mississippi River. West Virginia is full of mountains in this region, which is why it was given this nickname.

30 The Grand Canyon is a gorge that was carved out by the Colorado River. It is in the Grand Canyon National Park, which was one of the first national parks in the United States.
