Technology integration is using technology to help meet the curriculum standards and learner outcomes of each lesson, unit or activity. We should first of all think of what we have/want to teach (and what we want our students to learn), and only then see if computers can help us achieve this.

Acquiring skills for information competency Deciding on what information is needed: brainstorming key ideas and making mind- maps out of them.

Acquiring skills for information competency Accessing that information effectively and efficiently: discussions of the advantages and disadvantages of different investigation methods and sources of information; comparison of results of searches for information in different online resources.

Acquiring skills for information competency Evaluating information critically by comparing with existing knowledge and values: comparison of student-written summaries; work on topic-sentences of paragraphs; identifying experts and others to consult.

Acquiring skills for information competency Using information effectively to achieve the desired outcome: "show and tell" - mini-presentations of plans and discussions of these; discussions on register and audience – how presentations should be changed to meet the needs of different audiences.

Acquiring skills for information competency Understanding the issues involved in the use of information. presentations of different online resources that provide good and bad examples of the issues involved; learners produce their own manual on "netiquette" and self-imposed rules, as a group.

Information competency yesterday & today The skills that comprise information competency have not arisen because of new technologies, but rather have always been important. What has changed is the quantity and variety of information available, meaning the acquisition of the skills is more complex than it was before.
