Humble Beginning APAO was officially launched on June 14 th, 2007 Created in response to concerns over current status of agrienergy sector MANDATE: “Support and promote the development of Ontario’s agriculture-based renewable energy sector” Started by 6 farmers – Board of Directors

Initial Objectives & Goals Not-for-Profit Develop a united voice to influence policies, support farm-based renewable energy; specifically biogas. Provide lateral communication and support amongst farmers & project developers Host educational workshops & forums

Operations & Administration “Full-time” Administrator Office of Genesys Biogas Paid by Genesys Biogas, reimbursed by APAO Such a symbiotic relationship was necessary to launch APAO Administrator only receives direction from President & Vice-President; hierarchy ensures time and money are appropriately spent.

Operations & Administration Incorporation completed in February 2008 Bylaws stipulate that board consists of: Minimum of 3 biogas representatives Maximum of 1 solar representatives Maximum of 1 wind representative 1, non-voting OMAFRA representative

Budget APAO started with seed money from initial members Has relied since on small grants, donations, and membership fees From June 14 th, 2007 – June 18 th, 2008, expenses = ~$50,000

Milestones Founding of APAO Incorporation of APAO Starting membership = 6 Current membership = 36 21 full members, 15 associate Production of joint grid connection guidelines document with Hydro One

Challenges & Lessons Learned Funding, Funding, Funding Recognition Development of membership Cooperation w/ ministries Establishment of infrastructure & hierarchy
