The Church Question: What is the relationship between the Gregorian Chant and life in a medieval monastery? Background: This style of singing grew out of Jewish worship traditions and was influenced by the music of the Greek Church. The name Gregorian Chant comes from Pope Gregory I, 590-604, biographer of St. Benedict. He set up schools to teach the proper forms of chant and collect and preserve the singing of the monks. Consider: rhythm, beat, language, effect

The Medieval Church SCA Activity: Analysis of a Benedictine Monastery’s Site Plan Using the archaeological site plan of a typical monastery found on the next slide as well as the pictures in your text (Infographic: Life in a monastery) write a paragraph analyzing what this evidence tells the historian about life in a religious house during the early middle ages. Be sure to incorporate the questions posed in your text, Thinking Critically, pp. 227. You will also want to include what you know about the Benedictine Rule.
